When and Why You Might Change Your Support Coordinator
Your Support Coordinator plays an important role in helping you get the most out of your NDIS plan, but, just like any working relationship, sometimes things change - and that’s okay. You have the right to choose who supports you, and that includes changing your Support Coordinator if they’re no longer the right fit for your needs.
When you might consider changing Support Coordinators
There’s no single reason to change Support Coordinators. Here are a few common situations where people decide to make a change:
1. Your needs or goals have changed.
As your life and goals evolve, you might need a Support Coordinator with different experience or skills - for example, someone with more knowledge in mental health or employment supports.
2. You’re not feeling fully supported.
If you’re finding it difficult to reach your goals, get timely communication, or understand your plan, it could be a sign that the partnership isn’t working as well as it could.
3. You’d like a different approach.
Every Support Coordinator has their own style. Some people prefer someone who takes the lead and provides structure, while others like a more collaborative, hands-on approach. It’s important that you feel comfortable and heard.
4. You’re moving or changing service providers.
If you’re relocating or already working with another organisation you trust for your supports, you might choose to have your Support Coordination with them as well, for consistency and convenience.
5. You’re looking for specialist support.
In some cases, you may need a Specialist Support Coordinator - for example, if you have more complex needs or multiple service providers involved in your care.
How to change your Support Coordinator
Changing Support Coordinators is usually straightforward. You can:
Speak with your current provider to let them know you’d like to make a change.
Find a new Support Coordinator who better suits your needs.
Notify the NDIS or your new provider, who will help ensure a smooth transition.
Remember, your NDIS plan belongs to you. You’re in control of who helps you use it.
Final thoughts
The most important thing is that you feel supported, understood, and empowered to achieve your goals. If that’s not the case, it’s completely reasonable to explore other options. A good Support Coordinator will always want what’s best for you - even if that means helping you move on to someone new.
