NDIS Support Coordination Is Changing – What Does It Mean for You?

If you receive Support Coordination through the NDIS, you may have heard about some upcoming changes to how these services will be delivered.

The Australian Government has announced plans to introduce a new Support Coordination and Connection (SCC) service from 1 July 2028, changing the way participants access Support Coordination.

While this may sound like a significant change, it's important to remember that nothing is changing immediately, and many of the details are still being worked through.

Here's what we know so far and what it could mean for you.

Do I Need to Change My Support Coordinator?

No, there is no need to change your Support Coordinator because of these proposed reforms at this stage.

If you currently receive Support Coordination through your NDIS plan, you can continue accessing your supports as usual.

The new system is not expected to commence until July 2028, and the government has indicated that participants will be supported through the transition.

For now, your Support Coordinator can continue helping you understand your plan, connect with providers, coordinate your supports and work towards your NDIS goals.

What Could Change in the Future?

Under the proposed changes, the government plans to introduce a new service called Support Coordination and Connection (SCC).

Currently, participants who have Support Coordination funding in their NDIS plans can use that funding to engage a Support Coordination provider.

Under the new approach:

  • Support Coordination would no longer be funded individually through participant NDIS plans. Instead, the NDIA would fund selected providers directly to deliver these services.

  • Participants would choose from approved providers appointed to deliver Support Coordination and Connection services.

  • The new service would aim to improve consistency and quality, helping participants access reliable support regardless of their circumstances or location.

  • There would be a greater focus on safeguarding and accountability, with clearer expectations around how services are delivered.

The government has indicated that these changes are intended to make Support Coordination more consistent, accessible and responsive to participants' needs.

However, the final design of the new service is still being developed, including how participants will access support and how existing arrangements will transition.

Will I Still Have Choice and Control?

Choice and control are important principles of the NDIS, and understandably, many participants are wondering how the changes could affect their ability to choose who supports them.

Under the proposed model, participants would still have a choice of Support Coordination providers, but that choice would be from a list of providers appointed by the NDIA.

This means the process of choosing a Support Coordinator may look different from what participants are familiar with today.

There are still questions about how the new system will work in practice, including what happens when participants have established relationships with their current Support Coordinators.

At Collabor8 Supports, we understand how important these relationships can be. Having someone who knows your circumstances, understands your goals and works alongside you can make a significant difference to your NDIS experience.

We'll continue following these developments closely, particularly those relating to participant choice, continuity of support and the quality of services available.

Can I Have My Say?

The Australian Government opened a consultation process in September 2026, inviting NDIS participants, families, carers, advocates and providers to provide feedback on the proposed changes.

The consultation closed on 2 October 2026, and the Department of Health, Disability and Ageing and the NDIA are now reviewing the feedback received.

This feedback will help inform recommendations to the government before decisions are made about the final design of the new service.

The consultation considered several important areas, including:

  • What the new Support Coordination and Connection service should provide.

  • How providers should be selected and funded.

  • How quality, safety and accountability can be strengthened.

  • How participants can continue accessing the support they need.

  • How the transition to the new system should be managed.

While this consultation period has ended, participants can continue staying informed through official NDIS updates and future announcements.

What Should I Do Now?

For most participants, there is nothing you need to do differently right now.

However, there are a few simple things you can do to stay informed and prepared:

  • Continue using your current supports: Your existing Support Coordination arrangements can continue under the current system.

  • Stay informed: Keep an eye on official NDIS announcements as more details become available.

  • Talk to your Support Coordinator: If you have questions or concerns, your Support Coordinator can help you understand the information currently available.

  • Keep focusing on your goals: Continue working with your providers to make the most of your NDIS plan and achieve the outcomes that matter to you.

It's also worth remembering that the proposed changes are still some time away, and further information will be provided as the new system takes shape.
