What the Latest NDIS Changes Mean for You (April/May 2026 Update)

We know there has been a lot of information circulating recently about changes to the NDIS. You may have seen news headlines, heard different opinions, or noticed conversations within the community that feel unclear or overwhelming.

Our role as your Support Coordination team is to help make sense of this for you - and to keep the focus on what actually impacts you day to day.

This update is designed to cut through the noise and explain things in plain language.

What’s changing in the NDIS?

There are ongoing updates being made to the NDIS at a national level. These changes are focused on:

  • Improving how the scheme is managed long-term

  • Updating how eligibility and access are assessed

  • Strengthening consistency and oversight across the system and providers

You may hear technical language like “reforms”, “framework changes”, or “funding adjustments”. In practical terms, this simply means the NDIS is continuing to evolve as it grows.

What this might mean for you

Depending on your situation and plan review timing, you may notice:

  • Some changes in how supports are funded or categorised

  • More structured planning conversations

  • Increased focus on how supports link to goals and daily functioning

It’s important to note that not everyone will experience changes at the same time, and many participants will see minimal or no immediate impact.

What is NOT changing

Despite the broader system updates, the core purpose of your supports remains the same.

For you, this means:

  • Your goals still guide your plan

  • Your support network remains important

  • Your services do not automatically change because of policy updates

Your everyday supports, routines, and services continue unless you are directly advised otherwise through an official NDIS planning process.

Why are these changes happening?

The NDIS is a large and growing system designed to support Australians with disability. Over time, governments review how it is working to ensure:

  • It remains financially sustainable

  • Supports are delivered fairly and consistently

  • Participants receive appropriate levels of funding and access

While the language around these changes can sometimes sound complex, the intention is to maintain the NDIS for the future.

What you should do right now

At this stage, there is nothing you need to change or do differently unless you have been specifically contacted about your plan.

We do recommend:

  • Reaching out if you receive any communication you are unsure about

  • Asking questions early if something in your plan changes

  • Speaking with your Support Coordinator before making decisions about services or funding
