EOFY Series: 5 Common EOFY/July Myths About the NDIS

Every year around tax time, we hear the same types of questions from NDIS participants.

"Does my plan reset on 1 July?"
"Will I lose my funding if I don't use it all?"

The short answer? Usually... no!

Let's bust some of the most common myths about the NDIS and the new financial year…

Myth #1: My NDIS Funding Resets on 1 July

False.

Unlike many government programs, the NDIS doesn't follow the financial year.

Your funding is linked to your individual plan dates. If your plan runs from October to October, for example, nothing changes on 1 July.

That's why it's important to know your own plan dates rather than worrying about the calendar.

Myth #2: I Have to Spend All My Funding Before EOFY

False.

There's no need to rush out and book extra services simply because it's the end of June.

Your funding should always be used because you genuinely need the support—not because of the financial year.

If you're unsure how you're tracking with your funding, it's worth speaking with your provider or support coordinator.

Myth #3: If I Don't Use All My Funding, I'll Automatically Get Less Next Time

False (or at least, not automatically).

This is one of the biggest myths we hear.

While your funding utilisation may be considered during future planning conversations, there is no rule that says spending less funding automatically means you'll receive less in your next plan.

What's far more important is being able to demonstrate:

  • Your disability-related support needs.

  • How your current supports are helping you work towards your goals.

  • Why ongoing or additional supports are considered reasonable and necessary.

Good evidence will always carry more weight than simply spending your entire budget.

Myth #4: July Is Only Important If I'm Self-Managed

False.

Whether you're agency-managed, plan-managed or self-managed, the start of a new financial year is a great opportunity to review your supports, check your progress and make sure everything is working as it should.

It's a chance to ask yourself:

  • Are my supports helping me achieve my goals?

  • Is there anything I'd like to change?

  • Am I getting good value from my providers?

Everyone benefits from taking stock.

Myth #5: I Should Wait Until My Plan Review to Make Changes

Definitely not.

If a support isn't working, your goals have changed, or you simply feel another provider may be a better fit, you don't have to wait until your next plan review.

Your NDIS journey should evolve with your needs, and making changes when they're needed can often lead to better outcomes.

Final Thoughts

While the financial year doesn't affect your NDIS funding directly, it is the perfect reminder to review your plan, your progress, and whether your supports are still helping you achieve the life you want.

The more you understand your NDIS plan, the more confident you'll be in making informed decisions and getting the most from your funding.
